Walk Leader : John Adams
John Adams is a walk leader for a group of walkers known as the Wyre Ramblers. On the coach for each trip John provides a brief printed summary of the planned walk for those wishing to join him.
The walks his group undertakes make good
use of not being constricted to a circular route. With a suitable dropping off and pickup point John plans many fine walks along some of the less frequented footpaths of Northern England.

Today's walk is mostly easy although the climb up Gordale Scar is tricky. There is lots to see as we take in all that Malham has to offer, and with plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings of the Cove and village.

TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE
Road :
From the Tourist Information Centre head towards the village and, after a short distance, cross to the east bank of Malham Beck via the pack horse bridge.
Footpath :
South, away from the village. Turn left at Mires Barn, heading northeast to New Laithe. Continue to Janet's Foss

JANET'S FOSS
Lane :
Join the lane just above Janet's Foss and continue northeast, heading for Gordale Bridge
Footpath :
Take the left footpath through the campsite, just before Gordale House and head towards Gordale Scar

GORDALE SCAR

Footpath :
Now it's time to scramble up Gordale Scar. It's a little tricky at first but soon becomes easier. The rest of the footpath remains steep throughout but it really shouldn't bother those without a head for heights. It's not very far to the top. Once there continue north for approximately 1 mile to join the lane junction below Seaty Hill
Lane :
Northwest along the left lane to join a track
Track :
Continue in the same direction to Lings Plantation near Malham Tarn
Pennine Way Footpath :
Continue north in the direction of the northern end of Malham Tarn. This short section of the route is part of the "Pennine Way" long distance footpath. Soon the turning point for this walk is reached, in view of the Boat House. In dry conditions this makes for a good refreshment or lunch stop

MALHAM TARN

Pennine Way Footpath :
Retrace the route back to Lings Plantation but then continue continue along the Pennine Way and head for Tarn Foot. Continue to the lane near the car park. Cross the bridge and continue left and south for a short distance, past "Water Sinks", Combe Hill, between Whatlowes and Ing Scar and on to Malham Cove

MALHAM COVE
Pennine Way Footpath :
Head west across the Limestone Pavement and descend into the Cove via the footpath steps. Have a good look round at the Cove before rejoining the Pennine Way, continuing to join the lane at Town Head
Lane :
South into Malham village
