| Slaidburn
is an unspoiled village in the centre of the Forest of Bowland, 8 miles
north of Clitheroe. This former possession of the White Rose county of Yorkshire is now firmly ensconced in the county of Lancashire. Although popular with visitors Slaidburn has lost none of its old world charm. The famous "Hark to Bounty" Inn resides in the centre of the village, which also has a Tea Shop, Youth Hostel, Village Shop, Village School and Church. Today's walk is fairly easy with little in the way of ascent. Stocks Reservoir was built in 1932 to provide drinking water for the residents of Lancashire's Fylde Coast. Now all that remains of Dalehead, the village, submerged when the reservoir was built, is the isolated Church of St. James. Rebuilt in an isolated location on a quite country lane leading to Clapham. You should make sure you have enough time to look in to the tiny Church of St. James, and its relocated churchyard. Then, if you are continuing the walk, spare a thought for all the former residents of Dalehead as you look over the now tranquil waters of Stocks Reservoir from Rushton Hill.
